Very rare, antique Binangon sword – western Visayas, Philippines – cockatoo shaped hilt – matching sheath with copper fittings – hefty convex forged blade.
 
This Filipino Binangon sword comes from Iloilo province in the western Visayas, Philippines.
More specifically, the bolo came from Barangay Binggawan in the town of Badiangan, a place known for its blade smiths.
 
In the local (Panay) dialect, the bolo is called a Binangon. It is a multi-purpose bolo used for work as well as for personal defense. The hefty blade is convexly forged and meets in a sharp point. It is a very effective weapon in jungle combat or in places where space is limited.
 
The hilt is made of wood and curves towards the blade. This serves to prevent the sword from slipping out of the hand in combat.
 
The Binangon is carried in a matching, flat wooden scabbard which is decorated with copper fittings.
