This rare, antique Balato dates to the end of the 19th century.
 
This Balato still has the authentic basket which is attached to the scabbard. The basket contains amulets serving as magical or spiritual objects.
 
The hilt is beautifully carved in the form of a lasara. A lisara is a mythical beast characteristic for the art and culture of the island of Nias, this mythical composite animal always has the wide-open jaws of a crocodile with projecting tongue, the large fangs of a bear and small horns on both sides. Every ‘lasara head’ has a small demon perching on top, called a ‘bekhu’. The ‘bekhu’ demon is always depicted as a small human or monkey.
 
The long blade has an almost straight back and edge; the edge is rounded towards the back at the point.
 
The two-part wooden scabbard is held together by 12 metal bands.
